Specific Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will design and execute reaction sequences and define processes to chemical intermediates and drug substances; perform chemical reactions, isolations, separations, purifications and crystallizations; conduct route scouting, reaction optimization, and scale-up demonstration; write concise procedures and reports to enable successful Technology Transfers; participate in project teams and communicate results in a team-based environment; interact with various departments to coordinate the scale-up of the projects to manufacturing facilities.
The candidate must be skilled in the art and practice of modern synthetic and mechanistic organic chemistry. Familiarity and competence with modern spectroscopic methods applied to structure determination including 1H and 13C NMR, infra-red spectroscopy, and mass spectroscopy are required. Experience in the use of preparative silica gel chromatographic separations as well as analytical separations involving HPLC and GC is required. Practical experience in multi-step syntheses is preferred. Experience with spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft Excel and database software such as SciFinder is a plus.

Essential Duties and Job Functions:    

Responsible for conducting scientific research for the discovery of drugs, the development of drug candidates or the research support of marketed drugs. Applies the principles and techniques of related scientific specialty to potential inventions, products and problems. Works in collaboration with more senior scientists or scientific directors to identify and validate targets, advance the development of economical, state-of-the art techniques to isolate characterize, purify and mass-produce substances, reagents, assays and tools in an effort to discover therapeutic bioproducts to make such substances available as tools for other research projects. Plans, designs, implements and analyzes laboratory experimentation to advance scientific knowledge of drug substances or techniques to identify such substances. May work on moderately complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires evaluation of intangible variables, requiring regular use of ingenuity and creativity. May advise research associates or members of project teams in the initiation and execution of laboratory experimentation, considering economic and safety factors. Participates in development of patent applications. Participates in group meetings. Presents results of work, interprets data, draws conclusions regarding presented material and nature of work. May make contributions to scientific literature and conferences through publication and presentation of research results. May act as a resource or provide work direction for other research personnel within the company.

Knowledge, Experience and Skills:    

Typically requires a PhD in appropriate scientific discipline, and 4 years of relevant experience that indicates an aptitude to make significant contributions within specialty and sustained strong performance and accomplishments that align to company goals. Demonstrates emerging ability in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Excellent verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills are required. Must be able to participate in highly effective teams. Requires ability to use common tools for effective scientific communication within the company. Demonstrates ability to recognize anomalous and inconsistent results and interpret experimental outcomes. Maintains full working knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories, applying such knowledge to the research direction that supports Company interests. Demonstrates technical proficiency, scientific creativity, collaboration with others and independent thought in suggesting experimental design and research strategy. Must think critically and creatively and be able to work independently, determine appropriate resources for resolution of problems and have strong organizational and planning skills.
