Member of Technical Staff – Hydrocarbon Scientist

ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company has an immediate opening for a Hydrocarbon Scientist at its Corporate Strategic Research Laboratory located in Annandale, New Jersey.

This position involves work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of industrial experts to extend our knowledge of heavy hydrocarbons in complex petroleum mixtures into areas of current and future interest. The researcher will utillize both computational tools as well as experimental methods to develop a comprehensive and validated understanding of scientific problems in hydrocarbon science. The research will be in the area of mechanisms and kinetics of organic reactions, with emphasis on complex molecules and complex mixtures of molecules. Possible focus areas of interest include fundamental structure-reactivity relationships, structure-property relationships, and thermodynamic and physical property models. The researcher will require strong interpersonal skills and be able to collaborate with computational chemists, chemical engineers, experimentalists, modelers, and analytical chemists. The initial assignment could be in one of several areas which extend hydrocarbon science fundamentals and applications, including biofuels, frontier resources, and lubricants.

Candidates should have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry (Physical or Physical Organic), or similar field with expertise in kinetics, reaction engineering, and/or complex phase behavior, modeling of large multicomponent systems, and the ability to express ideas mathematically and develop computer code.
  • Familiarity with general hydrocarbon chemistry and analytical methods for determining chemical structures of organic compounds and/or compositions of mixtures of organic compounds.
  • Familiarity with computational software tools for calculating properties and/or kinetics of organic compounds.
  • Demonstrated individual contribution to research in a results-oriented team environment.
  • A strong track record of external publications and presentations and a desire to publish and participate in external technical meetings.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Special consideration will be given to candidates who also possess the following attributes:

  • Experience in an experimental setting on hydrocarbons, especially in the areas of measurement of phase separation, phase composition, rheology, and crystallization.
  • Experience in the petroleum and petrochemical industry.
  • Experience with either Density Functional Theory, neural nets, and genetic algorithms.
  • Ability to postulate reaction mechanisms and conduct kinetic studies, with the aid of relevant molecular models and computational tools.

ExxonMobil’s Corporate Research Laboratory is a facility of over 200 scientists and engineers involved in fundamental and process-oriented research in diverse scientific disciplines related to ExxonMobil’s Upstream, Downstream, Chemicals, and Corporate sectors. The Laboratory features excellent support and analytical facilities, an international staff, and is strongly integrated with the external scientific community.
