The Precious Metal Assay Services Laboratory in Union NJ provides direct analytical support to BASF's precious metal trading, refining and catalyst manufacture businesses, functioning as the corporate center of excellence for precious metals analysis.   This position is based in the instrumental section of the assay laboratory.  The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting tests on solids, solutions and slurries to determine precious metal, rare earth and base metal content using a variety of instrumental methods, including ICP, ICPMS, AAS and XRF. 

Previous supervisory experience is required.The incumbent will work under minimal supervision and should have a high degree of proficiency in the fundamental aspects of instrumental analytical chemistry and data analysis, solid communication skills, and the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.  They will be responsible for the on-time execution of analytical requests in the area of instrumental precious metals analysis, providing direct analytical support to BASF businesses.  They will be expected to handle multiple tasks with a high degree of accuracy in a fast-paced environment.The successful candidate must have excellent general laboratory skills, including detailed record keeping and knowledge of safe handling of chemicals and equipment. 

Qualifications

• Ph.D in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering with 1-3 years related experience or MS degree in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering with 3-5 years related experience.  BASF recognizes Institutions of Higher Education that are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent.

• Expected to possess knowledge of analytical chemistry principles, procedures and theories beyond the Masters Degree level, either through additional schooling or related work experience in the area of instrumental analysis.

• Experience in instrumental analytical chemistry is required, to include the techniques of ICP, ICPMS, AAS and XRF. 

• Previous supervisory experience is required.

• Strong written and oral communication skills.

• Excellent computer skills required; experience in the in-depth operation of a LIMS system would be a bonus.

• Experience working in an ISO-compliant laboratory is preferred.

• Experience in the analysis of precious metals is a plus.
