The Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University is seeking candidates for the position of Associate Scientist. This position is within the Environmental and Protection Sciences research program of the Ames Laboratory. The position will conceive, design and conduct research in molecular spectroscopy involving development of instrumentation, data analysis routines, and analytical methods for use in infrared, Raman, and mass spectrometry. Additional research will be conducted in elemental spectroscopy involving laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence. The Associate Scientist will present and defend research results at professional meetings, draft manuscripts for publication with collaborating co-authors, and writes research proposals for funding of future research projects. Required qualifications: MS degree plus five (5) years of experience or Ph.D. plus two (2) years of experience. Degree must in physics or chemistry or related field, and experience must include experimental computerized spectroscopic research. Preferred qualifications: Experience in mass spectrometry, photoacoustic spectroscopy, near infrared spectroscopy, Fourier transform spectrometry, laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Evidence of numerical calculation and application programming skills, including writing multipurpose, multitasking applications in modern interactive Windows environment using C++, C#, Open GL, and CUDA languages. Experience using data recording devices such as CCD cameras, spectrometers, data acquisition devices, and instrument controllers with existing applications (or the ability to write these if missing). Demonstrated ability to write interfaces to existing device driver libraries. Demonstrated broad knowledge of numerical calculation methods, including modeling problems which required massively parallel algorithms. Publication record in spectroscopic research.
