The Engineered Materials group is seeking a material chemist/radiochemist (or a chemist willing to learn material and radiochemistry) to develop procedures and synthetic methods for producing, modifying, and applying functional materials in applied science applications. The candidate will be responsible for synthesizing nanoparticulate material and producing materials that will then be used to sample uranium hexafluoride in order to determine uranium isotopic compositions. The candidate will directly collaborate with other national laboratories and government entities; national and international travel may be asked of the candidate. The candidate will also develop engineered laser ablation targets that will be used for tapped ion quantum computing applications. This position involves planning and performing experiments with radioactive and non-radioactive materials, interpreting data, and writing up experimental results for inclusion in reports. Ideally, the candidate will possess knowledge of, or have a strong desire to learn, radiochemistry, radiochemical techniques, and material science. The candidate should have significant experience and foundational knowledge in a variety of chemical and/or materials characterization techniques. This position will offer training and opportunities for further honing and diversifying radiochemistry and characterization skills, including Radiation Worker II training, and using advanced instrumentation tools, such microscopy, spectroscopy, and x-ray techniques.

Ideally, the candidate has existing experience or a passion for gaining new experience and expertise in one or more of the following fields: radiochemistry, micro/nanomaterials, quantum information science, nuclear safeguards and forensics, or surface chemistry.

Specifically, the candidate will be a member of diverse project teams, including staff such as chemists, engineers, materials scientists, data scientists, and program managers. Ideally, the candidate has existing experience or a passion for gaining new experience and expertise in one or more of the following fields: radiochemistry, micro/nanomaterials, quantum information science, nuclear safeguards and forensics, or surface chemistry.

 

The candidate will:

  • Execute technical tasking on schedule with an emphasis on safety
  • Adhere to strict quality, security, and safety requirements
  • Develop and test new hypotheses and approaches to address complex problems
  • Communicate and share their results both to internal teams and externally in reports, oral presentations, and intellectual property documents
  • Contribute to new proposals in collaboration with senior staff, network, and emphasize team building with subject matter experts across complementary fields and disciplines
  • Plan and perform experiments with radioactive and non-radioactive materials, and interpret data
  • Design and assemble complex research systems, as well as operate those systems, with minimal supervision
  • Independently complete assigned tasks and exercise limited judgement on work details


Requirements

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA and 2 years of relevant experience -OR-
  • MS/MA -OR-
  • PhD

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in materials science, materials engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field plus 2 years of related work or educational experience; or, Masters in materials science, materials engineering, chemistry, chemical engineering, or related field plus 5 years of related work or educational experience
  • Expertise in chemical or materials synthesis and experience with a range of characterization processes and techniques
  • Interest in tackling large challenges across diverse basic science and applied mission areas as part of interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently on individual tasks and collaboratively on larger deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with radiological materials in fume hoods or gloveboxes
  • Interest in tackling large challenges across diverse basic science and applied mission areas as part of interdisciplinary teams
  • Ability to work independently on individual tasks and collaboratively on larger deliverables
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with a demonstrated ability to work in a chemical laboratory
  • Experience contributing to proposals
  • Have a desire to mentor and oversee post-doctoral, post-master, and/or post-bachelor research associates, technicians and students
  • Possess key attributes leading to successful career progression, including leadership and organizational skills, and project execution
