Description

NIOSH is part of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It has the mandate to assure “every man and woman in the Nation safe and healthful working conditions and to preserve our human resources.” NIOSH has more than 1,300 employees from a diverse set of fields including epidemiology, medicine, nursing, industrial hygiene, safety, psychology, chemistry, statistics, economics, and many branches of engineering.

What We Do

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the nation’s leading science-based, data-driven, service organization that protects the public’s health. For more than 70 years, we’ve put science into action to help children stay healthy so they can grow and learn; to help families, businesses, and communities fight disease and stay strong; and to protect the public’s health.

Our mission is to develop new knowledge in the field of occupational safety and health and to transfer that knowledge into practice. NIOSH programs are responsive to the occupational safety and health problems that burden workers now and in the future. A career at NIOSH means joining one of the best places to work as a public servant, protecting the lives of all workers.

Our workforce is as diverse as the population we serve. We have a world-class team of talented experts from many different fields and backgrounds who share a common passion for occupational health and safety. It’s this diversity of thought and inclusivity that fosters ingenuity, the collaboration of ideas, and partnership.

NIOSH accomplishes its mission in partnership with industry, workers, governments, academia, and scientific and professional communities, both nationally and internationally.
