Assistant Teaching Professor in Chemistry
Position Description:
he Department of Chemistry at New Mexico Tech invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor. This faculty position is to teach Chemistry courses, is responsible for coordinating, instructing, and supervising undergraduate chemistry teaching laboratories, along with overseeing and maintaining the department’s instrumentation. This is an appointment for a highly motivated individual who values excellence in teaching, mentoring, and laboratory management.
Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications aligned with the details in NMT’s Policy and Procedure for Appointment, Promotion & Tenure. The preferred start date is the Fall 2026 semester.
Key Responsibilities:
Key responsibilities of the position include teaching selected lecture courses and directing, coordinating, and supervising undergraduate teaching labs in General, Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Analytical, Biochemistry, and other areas in the Chemistry department. The faculty will assist the department with curriculum development and assessment, provide mentorship and guidance to TAs, undergraduate students, and lab managers, and collaborate with faculty colleagues to develop new laboratory experiments and integrate modern instrumentation into the curriculum. Oversight of safety protocols, training, and the supervision of teaching assistants
(TAs), and ensuring compliance with institutional, state, and federal safety regulations are key responsibilities. Finally, a key task is to maintain and upgrade departmental (educational and research) equipment and instrumentation.
Department Description:
The department’s teaching and research strengths are in biomedical chemistry, electrochemistry, and atmospheric/environmental chemistry. Our institution values
excellence in teaching, and a successful candidate will demonstrate strong enthusiasm for mentoring and educating students at all levels. A strength of our rigorous undergraduate program is the extensive opportunities for involvement in mentored research. We have well-established graduate programs, including master’s, accelerated master’s, and PhD pathways. Candidates should help us attract more students to our graduate and undergraduate programs.

Requirements
A PhD in chemistry or a closely related field is required at the time of application. Candidates are expected to have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching, strong organizational and communication skills, and knowledge of laboratory safety practices. Experience supervising or teaching undergraduate teaching labs and mentoring teaching assistants is preferred.
