As an Innovation Chemist, the right candidate will partner with and report to the Innovation Chemist & Materials Manager to develop light weight, high performance rubber soles and foam midsoles to advance our US-based innovation programs. This is a highly hands-on role requiring a strong understanding of polymer formulations, material properties, processing, and evaluation. Materials include crosslinked rubber, thermoset PU, thermoplastics, TPEs, adhesives, and foaming agents.
This role is based at our factory in North Brookfield, MA, and is ideal for someone who enjoys being in the lab, working directly with equipment, and bringing new ideas to life.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Develop and improve compounds, processes, and products which meet or exceed customer specifications.
- Evaluate new raw materials and innovations in partnership with suppliers to enhance performance, improve processing, and reduce costs.
- Communicate with team members to evaluate projects, brainstorm ideas, establish schedule for completion, and provide updates to the Innovation Team.
- Problem-solve issues through chemistry, engineering, and process improvement.
- Maintain accurate records of projects in compliance with ISO procedures and processes.
- Communicate and work with other Vibram facilities, customers, and suppliers.
- Support the investigation, purchase, and commercialization of new equipment and manufacturing processes.
- Provide technical support and product information to internal and external customers, including compound specifications and test data.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymers, Rubber, Plastics, or related field.
- 57 years of relevant experience in material development, polymer formulation, or related work.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
- Experience with experimental design (preferred).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with high attention to detail.
- Ability to work in both lab and production environments, including moving throughout the facility and operating equipment as needed.
