The University of Pittsburgh Department of Neurology is interested in hiring a Laboratory Research Technician to join a translational neuromuscular research group. The laboratory technician will perform a variety of independent laboratory work including executing experimental protocols, collecting and analyzing data, and generating research figures for neurodegenerative diseases such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Frontotemporal Dementia. The technician will assist with inventory, ordering, and training of fellow lab members. To perform these tasks well, meticulous record keeping of research data and excellent interpersonal and communication skills are prerequisites. Following training from the principal investigator and/or senior research staff, the research assistant is expected to perform tasks with minor supervision. A qualified candidate should have at least a bachelor's degree in biological science or equivalent and at least 2 years' experience in a biomedical research setting. Candidates with demonstrated expertise in human iPSC culture, immunofluorescence microscopy, molecular biology and murine colony management will be preferred.
Job Summary
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Essential Functions
1. Assist with experimental procedures, data collection, and analysis (80%):
• Perform a variety of experimental procedures independently after training. Procedures may include molecular biology (molecular cloning, PCR, genotyping, & RT-PCR), biochemistry (western blotting, immunoprecipitation, & proteomics), and cell biology (cell/tissue culture, immunofluorescence staining, & confocal microscopy).
• Analysis of research data and generate graphs using tools such as Graphpad Prism, Matlab, Python, Fiji, and Imaris. • Generate scientific figures using BioRender and Adobe Illustrator.
2. Oversee mouse colony management, breeding, genotyping, and record-keeping (10% effort)• Additional functions will be provided during the interview process.
