• The Department of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (OCS) provides graduate, predoctoral and dental hygiene students with an educational foundation in the basic sciences, including instruction in microbiology, biochemistry, nutrition, anatomy, pharmacology and physiology. Research is a chief priority at Pitt Dental Medicine, and it continues to be a strength of the department, with many faculty maintaining vigorous research programs in the areas of Craniofacial Regeneration and Craniofacial and Dental Genetics, and a number of other areas of study. We are consistently ranked as a top-tier dental school. Research at the school not only establishes national and international prominence but also promotes high-quality instruction. Through sharing their research knowledge, faculty encourage students to develop critical thinking regarding the scientific basis of practice and appreciation of the rapid changes within the profession. Job Summary
Performs a variety of laboratory experiments and procedures. Prepares specimens. Oversees supply management. Operates and properly maintains equipment.
Essential Functions
The Laboratory Technician (full time) will be primarily responsible for carrying out experiments involving characterization of human DNA sequence variation performing DNA manipulation, PCR, electrophoresis, DNA sequencing, and Real-time PCR (TaqMan). In addition, the candidate will be responsible for accurate tracking and record keeping of large numbers of samples from several independent studies. This individual will conduct various laboratory experiments and assays under supervision of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Bezamat) related to genetic analysis, histological processing of tissues, cell culture experiments and microscopic imaging. The candidate will organize, analyze, and review the resulting data and troubleshoot experiments including validation of new assays. The candidate will be responsible for administrative oversight of large projects, scheduling, managing Redcap database of participant medical information, de-identifying participant information, and responsible for data entry. Eventually, the candidate will be responsible for supporting laboratory training of students, post-docs, and fellows. This position requires a bachelor's degree; master's degree preferred in Biology. Experience in real-time TaqMan PCR, managing laboratory supplies, and tracking orders are also preferred.
Physical Effort
Moderate physical effort required. May be required to stand/move for several hours at a time. May be required to move objects up to 50 pounds with or without assistance of equipment.
