Assistant Teaching Professor of Chemistry

The Chemistry Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for an assistant teaching professor. This is a full-time, on-campus, non-tenure-track position beginning July 1, 2027. The position is a renewable, three-year appointment, subject to satisfactory performance and institutional needs. Position and Qualifications 

Programs offered by the Chemistry Department prepare students to meet the challenges of a complex global society. Facilitated by modern methods of analysis and close working relationships with faculty, students receive theoretical and practical instruction in all major areas of chemistry including analytical chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and physical chemistry. The department offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in chemistry, including biochemistry concentrations, as well as a B.A. degree in chemistry with a business concentration. 

The primary teaching need for this position is in the department's general chemistry sequence. The successful candidate will contribute substantially to introductory chemistry instruction including lecture and laboratory courses serving both majors and non-majors. Depending on departmental needs and the candidate's qualifications, additional teaching assignments may include courses in other areas of the curriculum. 

Candidates must have a master’s or Ph.D. degree in chemistry or a master’s or Ph.D. degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate credit hours in chemistry. Additionally, the applicant’s degree must be in hand by July 1, 2027. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to student-centered undergraduate teaching and mentoring in a liberal arts environment. Competitive applicants will provide evidence of effective teaching practices, meaningful assessment and feedback, mentoring, and support for student learning and success. Evidence may include prior teaching experience, educational outreach, tutoring, workshops, mentoring of student organizations or research students, formal preparation in teaching and pedagogy, participation in pedagogical professional development, or other relevant experiences. Candidates are encouraged to describe experiences that demonstrate their ability to support student learning, belonging, and success both inside and outside the classroom. 

Preferred qualifications include the ability to teach organic chemistry or physical chemistry, interest in contributing to the mission of a historically women’s college, and experience working with and mentoring students from a wide variety of backgrounds in the sciences.

Review of applications will begin on Sept. 7, 2026 and will continue until the position is filled.

•        Cover letter describing qualifications for the position and interest in teaching at a liberal arts institution
•        Statement of teaching philosophy and experience (maximum three pages) that addresses the candidate's approach to undergraduate teaching and mentoring. Applicants are encouraged to discuss strategies for supporting learning and success in classroom environments where students have various backgrounds, life experiences, and abilities.
•        Curriculum vitae  
•        Unofficial graduate transcripts

 Candidates selected for further consideration will be asked to provide: 

•        Sample syllabus from a chemistry course or a course the candidate is prepared to teach
•        Professional letter of recommendation that speaks to the candidate’s ability/experience of mentoring and teaching students emailed directly by the letter’s author

Candidates invited for campus interviews will be asked to provide contact information for two additional professional references. Reference checks will be conducted by the search committee.  

The selected candidate will be asked to submit official transcripts to the Office of the Provost, and once they accept a contingent employment offer, a criminal history background check will be conducted. Additionally, the selected candidate must be authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis, and Hollins University will not sponsor employment visas for this role.
