The upper-level student will conduct an independent research project directed toward a senior thesis or capstone project focused on developing a genetically encoded reporter for NRF2 activity. This position is designed to provide hands-on experience in experimental design, molecular biology, and data analysis, with the goal of contributing original findings to the lab's research program.
The student will receive mentorship in research design, experimental methods, and scientific communication. This experience is intended to serve as a capstone or thesis project and to prepare the student for future graduate or professional training in biomedical research.
Responsibilities
The student will work under the supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior lab members but will be expected to take initiative in shaping the project, troubleshooting experiments, and interpreting results. This position emphasizes intellectual contributions to the research process rather than routine lab maintenance.
JOB DUTIES:
- Contribute to the design of molecular strategies for generating a reporter of NRF2 activity.
- Perform and troubleshoot experimental approaches (e.g., cloning, transfection, reporter assays).
- Collect, organize, and analyze experimental data, with a focus on interpretation and presentation.
- Engage in regular discussions with the PI and lab members to refine hypotheses and experimental plans.
- Prepare written summaries of progress and present findings at lab meetings.
- Maintain accurate lab notebooks and follow best practices for research documentation.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent with an interest in the sciences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrollment in a senior undergraduate program in biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field.
- Strong interest in scientific research and in pursuing independent, hypothesis-driven experiments.
- Ability to dedicate at least 9-12 hours per week to laboratory work and data analysis.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Prior coursework in molecular or cell biology is required; prior research experience is desirable.
The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.30 to $30.13 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position.
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees access to a retirement savings plan, an employee assistance program, paid sick leave (1 hour for every 30 hours worked), and prorated paid holidays (up to 13 days per year).
