Role Overview
We are seeking a Lead Formulation Chemist to lead product development across skincare, haircare, and color cosmetics. This individual will own formulation from concept through commercialization and play a critical role in shaping BCM’s technical capabilities and reputation.
This is a high-impact, hands-on role for someone who thrives in both the lab and client-facing environments, and who wants to help build a modern beauty manufacturing platform.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead formulation development across skincare, haircare, and color cosmetics
- Translate brand briefs into innovative, high-performance, and scalable formulations
- Own the full product lifecycle: bench development → pilot → scale-up → production
- Partner with operations to ensure formulations are optimized for manufacturability and cost
- Work closely with sourcing on raw material selection, vendor qualification, and cost targets
- Interface directly with clients on product development, performance, claims, and iteration cycles
- Conduct and oversee stability, compatibility, and performance testing
- Ensure compliance with cosmetic and OTC regulatory requirements (FDA, MoCRA, etc.)
- Troubleshoot formulation challenges and production issues
- Stay current on ingredient trends, textures, delivery systems, and emerging formats
- Contribute to building BCM’s formulation library and innovation pipeline
Requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- 5–10+ years of experience in cosmetic formulation (skincare, haircare, and/or color cosmetics)
- Strong expertise in emulsions, surfactants, actives, preservation systems, and rheology
- Proven experience scaling formulations from lab to commercial production
- Familiarity with OTC monographs and cosmetic regulatory frameworks
- Experience working in a contract manufacturer, brand, or product development lab
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
