Job Purpose:
This position supports the research of environmental engineering faculty. The Research Technician will perform water treatment experiments to evaluate the performance of coagulation and powdered activated carbon to remove dissolved organic matter and disinfection byproduct precursors. Experiments will also be performed to evaluate dissolved organic matter leaching from burned soils and sediments. Initial tasks will also involve examining volatile organic compound sorption and desorption from plastic pipe materials. Analytical chemistry techniques such as GC-MS and LC-MS will be used.
Essential Functions:
- 70% - Water Treatment Experiments
- Water treatment experiments will be performed using a jar test apparatus to test the performance of coagulants and a tumbler will be used to assess the performance of activated carbon.
- A tumbler will be used to evaluate contaminant sorption and desorption.
- 30% - Water Quality Analysis
- Several different water quality analyses will be performed including total organic carbon analysis, UV spectroscopy, fluorescence, GC-MS, and LC-MS.
- Additional Duties as Assigned by the Department
Educational Requirement:
Bachelor's Degree
Years of Related Experience Requirement:
<1 year
In lieu of the educational qualifications, candidates may qualify with equivalent professional experience at a ratio of one year of experience for each year of required education.
Skills & Abilities:
Previous experience performing water treatment experiments and water quality analyzers including TOC, GC-MS, and LC-MS analysis.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, Excel, and Word.
Proficient in English written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills.
Demonstrated time management, punctuality, and priority setting skills.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to interpret and apply complex policies and regulations.
High analytical capability, with ability to identify issues, compare data, and resolve discrepancies.
Physical & On-Campus Requirements:
In-Office Presence - Ability to work on-site in typical office setting and participate in in-person meetings with colleagues: 5 days/week
Standing/Sitting - Ability to remain in a stationary position for a prolonged period: Daily (>75% of time)

The budgeted salary range that the University reasonably expects to offer for this position: $27.07 - $27.93 per hour
Pay Range:
Minimum Salary (Non-Exempt): 21.65
Midpoint Salary (Non-Exempt): 27.07
Maximum Salary (Non-Exempt): 32.48
