- Senior Research Scientists, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences
Description
OVERVIEW
Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences invites applications for Senior Research Scientists (SRSs). These positions are heads of research programs, equivalent to a principal investigator or faculty positions in research universities. This search is open to faculty at all career stages (equivalent to Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor ranks). At Bigelow Laboratory, each SRS leads a team to pursue their own funded research, educational, and entrepreneurial portfolio that advances the institutional mission.
Bigelow Laboratory scientists use innovative approaches to study the foundation of global ocean health and unlock its potential to improve the future for all life on our planet. Our science unlocks the genetic, cellular, and chemical diversity of marine organisms; delves into the complexities of climate interactions; and elucidates the foundational dynamics of oceanic food webs. Our vision transcends traditional marine sciences, embracing research ventures spanning coastal and terrestrial landscapes, aquaculture, and biotechnology. We aim to generate groundbreaking insights and address urgent challenges through these endeavors. Built for scientists and run by scientists, this bold and nimble approach has transformed our independent nonprofit into a world-renowned hub of ocean discovery over the last 50 years.
We host a thriving community of scientists whose research is enabled by state-of-the-art facilities, a collaborative atmosphere, scientific freedom, a transparent and efficient management structure, support for work-life balance, and growing science and outreach capacity. Bigelow Laboratory is an inclusive community of scientists from around the world that welcomes and supports diverse opinions and cultures and is routinely ranked as one of the “Best Places to Work in Maine”.
In line with our strategic plan, we are eager to recruit a cohort of new SRSs who will pioneer innovative, interdisciplinary investigations to propel Bigelow Laboratory's mission to new heights. We are actively seeking multiple (3) SRS hires in one or more of the following categories:
1 - Natural Products Chemistry:
We seek to bring in expertise in the study of metabolites – from their form to their function – to complement our expertise in ecosystems and organismal processes and genetics. Highly qualified candidates would have a demonstrated track record in the characterization of metabolites, e.g. targeted or non-targeted metabolomics, proteomics, lipidomics or other similar fields. We have a preference for candidates interested in developing innovative applied uses of chemicals from marine organisms as well as exploring how these molecules function in organismal interactions.
2 - Deep-Sea Ecosystem Exploration and Research:
We seek to bring in expertise in the scientific exploration and research of deep sea ecosystems and biogeochemical processes. Highly qualified candidates would have a demonstrated track record in leading deep sea expeditions. We have a preference for candidates interested in deep-sea biodiversity, organism-mineral interactions, and innovative applications from novel marine genetic resources from the deep sea.
3 - Open topic hire in areas aligned with our strategic plan.
We seek to diversify our scientific expertise in ways outlined in our strategic plan. Highly qualified candidates would have strong potential to collaborate with other scientists at Bigelow Laboratory in exciting new ways.
Bigelow Laboratory is a cutting-edge research and education campus with unique resources and facilities for advanced research. SRSs can also participate in Bigelow Laboratory’s sponsored teaching and mentoring activities. SRSs receive some institutional salary support to engage in governance and administrative activities associated with our unique operational model. Salary and start-up packages are based upon current career level and are negotiable. Salaries are also regularly reviewed for bias. REQUIREMENTS
Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field and experience leading an independent research program, including supervision of students, postdoctoral researchers, technicians, or research staff.
We will consider candidates at all levels of their career progression. The strongest candidates will have a demonstrated track record acquiring a diverse portfolio of sustained external funding and leading scientific programs. We welcome applications from candidates who will bring to their research the perspective that comes from a nontraditional educational background or understanding of the experiences of those underrepresented in higher education. Dual career applicants are welcome. We recognize the challenges faced by dual-career couples and are committed to assisting candidates and their partners in identifying employment opportunities in the region.
